Prime Minister Justin Trudeau visits Hamilton and region

Prime Minister Trudeau made several stops in our area today, meeting with Mohawk College students and Hamilton’s mayor. Then he made his way to the niagara region with stops in St. Catharines and Port Colborne.

The most dramatic moment of the day was at Hamilton city hall when the Prime Minister was confronted by a protestor with pumpkin seeds. Justin Trudeau was just leaving out a side door of Hamilton City Hall when former Green Party of Canada candidate Ute Schmid-Jones pushed through a crowd of reporters. On Facebook, Schmid-Jones said she wanted to give the heart-decorated pumpkin seeds to the PM but couldn’t get close enough.

She was not charged. Other protesters said they were there to oppose pipelines and the national energy board.

The Mayor of Hamilton says this is the best relationship the city has had with a federal counterpart. Trudeau toured chambers and took selfies with councillors after about 20 minutes with the mayor. Trudeau also ate at Dundas’ 102 year old Picone’s Fine Foods, and he wasn’t the first of the country’s top politicians to be served there. The store filled with well wishers, including a family from Syria. The PM then visited Mohawk College where students asked Trudeau about the crisis in Syria.

Prime Minister Justin Trudeau was in Niagara tonight for the annual two-day Liberal Party of Canada retreat.
