More than a dozen volunteers geared up with gloves and garbage bags today to clean up Spencer Creek, one of Dundas’ most popular trails.

About 20 employees from Flamboro Downs split up into groups to pick up litter. It’s part of a national effort called the Great Canadian Shoreline clean-up and for these volunteers, Spencer Park was an easy choice. While the group filled up more than a dozen garbage bags in just one hour, it’s a lot less than last year when they collected double that amount.

The city spends about $15 000 each year for the ‘team up to clean up program’, providing gloves and garbage bags for efforts like this one. The city says the return on that $15 000 is huge.

“We have about 48 000 hours of volunteer work, which translate almost a million dollars in effort in this community.” Jennifer Didomenico, Hamilton Public Works.
