Fire in Downtown Hamilton

A large fire at MC Automotive on Barton Street could be seen from the top of the escarpment this afternoon. People in the area immediately began tweeting photos of the blaze. When it first started, the smoke was thick and black with tall flames that were visible despite the quickly traveling clouds of smoke.

The fire began when sparks from a welding torch hit the floor. Damage to the shop was severe but firefighters were able to keep the blaze contained and it did not damage the surrounding properties. The owner of the shop was taken to hospital as a precaution due to a preexisting heart condition and another employee is being treated for smoke inhalation, they are both expected to be okay.
