Most people think hearing problems mainly affects seniors but a new study finds that nearly 30% of teenagers have a condition called Tinnitus, a ringing or buzzing in the ears.
“It’s a growing problem and I think it’s going to get worse,” says study co-author, Larry Roberts, a senior researcher in the department of Psychology, Neuroscience and behavior at McMaster University.
The research points to an alarming level of early hearing damage in young people who are exposed to loud music. Roberts points out that while Tinnitus may seem to be temporary, it’s likely to come back later in life and come back to stay.
The study involved 170 students between 11 and 17 years old in Brazil.
