This week marks the 150th anniversary of the Battle of Ridgeway. Canadian soldiers were deployed to Ridgeway to fight off Irish-American invaders known as Fenians. It was fought in what is now the town of Fort Erie. Officials there are gearing up for a parade and memorial to honour those who fought in the battle and while it only lasted a few hours, the battle is hailed a key turning point in Canada becoming a country.

On Saturday 200 soldiers from the Queen’s own Rifles of Canada and the Royal Hamilton Light Infantry will parade down Ridge Road, the same route the soldiers marched in 1866.
