Niagara College will be home to the country’s first distilling program. It will go-hand-in-hand with a new state of the art teaching distillery which will be built on the college’s Niagara-on-the-Lake campus.

“We started with the wine program over 15 years ago, added the brew program in 2010 and so I would say it has been in our mind thinking about distilling.” Craig Youdale, Niagara College.

Over the last 4 years the college has been consulting with distillers in Ontario, the U.S. and even as far as Scotland. The artisan distilling program is scheduled to start in the fall of next year. The one year graduate certificate program will combine both hands on training and classroom work. Students will be taught in a new teaching distillery. The 2 000 square foot facility will become part of the existing wine visitor and education centre on the Niagara-on-the-Lake campus. Niagara College says it will accept 20 students in the first year of the program. Construction on the new facility is scheduled to begin this summer and wrap up at the end of the year.
