UPDATE: Fire officials have discovered some damage to the structure of the building and have requested that the Hamilton building department come take a look at it. The estimated damage could increase.

A fire broke out inside a waste transfer station containing around 200 tonnes of household garbage early Wednesday morning. It happened at Wasteco on Lake Avenue North in Stoney Creek just before 3:00am.

Fire officials say the building is still structurally sound and estimate the damage at around $5,000.

No one was injured.
