Rolling protest

It was a slow morning commute for thousands of drivers in the GTA.

About 200 tow truck drivers staged a protest, in the form of a slow-moving procession, disrupting traffic into and out of the city. They travelled down the D-V-P and the Gardiner Expressway with their lights flashing en route to Queen’s Park, where they then staged a rally.

Tow truck drivers say the “day of awareness” protests new auto insurance legislation, which goes into affect next year. Bill 15 limits the number of hours operators can work and requires drivers to provide a list of charges to customers.

The province says the new rules will regulate the tow truck industry and reduce auto insurance rates.

But tow truck industry officials say the legislation will put more restrictions on drivers, affect their bottom line and could eventually raise prices.
