The winner of last fall’s record breaking Lotto 6/49 jackpot has finally claimed the cash. Zhe Wang won what is being hailed the largest jackpot ever in the history of Canadian lottery. The draw back on the October 17th was worth $64 million and was purchased at a Petro Canada in Mississauga.

According to the OLG, Wang decided not to do a news conference, which is not mandatory. In Ontario, anyone who wins a $1000 or more has their name automatically published online. $50 000 or more and a photo of you holding a massive cheque goes up. Every month about 7500 names are posted online. The minute a person hands over their money to purchase a lottery ticket they are agreeing to those conditions.

“Everyone asks, nobody ever wins the lottery or that is their blanket statement or no one has ever won in my community. What we want to do is show the general public that people are winning the lottery and those prizes are being claimed.” Says Tony Bitonti from the OLG.

Opting out of a news conference is easy but proving your a winner is a different matter. Prizes over a $1000 have to be claimed at the OLG prize centre in downtown Toronto. It can take up to 3 hours before your ticket is validated. You don’t have to be Canadian citizen to win either. And while the OLG doesn’t do a criminal background check, make sure you’ve made good on your child support or else that will be taken out of your winnings.
