Today is ‘National drink wine day,’ and whether it’s intentional or not, Premier Kathleen Wynne announced that wine will be found on your grocery store shelves this fall.
“Ultimatley, up to 300 large chain and independent grocery stores across the province will be authorized to sell wine along with beer, cider and fruit wines.”
70 grocery stores will stock their shelves with wine by the fall, half of those stores will focus soley on Ontario wines, no wine will cost less than $10.95. 150 of the 292 private in-house wine stores will enter the main grocery store space so shoppers can pay for their groceries and alcohol at the same checkout.
Opposition leaders say while they welcome the new competition and believe that this is a step in the right direction but this good news is just a distraction made by the Liberals before they lay down the bad news in the form of next week’s provincial budget.
