HAPPENING NOW:

Fear of the dark and insomnia

A study out of Toronto suggests fear of the dark may be keeping some insomniacs awake at night.

Researchers at Ryerson University say this is important to know because a technique often used in dealing with insomnia might actually make a person’s darkness phobia worse.

People with sleep problems are routinely told to go to another room and do some activity until they become sleepy, but that could actually reinforce their fear of the dark.

The research is being presented Monday at the “Sleep 2012” conference.
