Police respond to ‘family trouble’ on Hamilton Mountain

UPDATE

A 43-year-old man has been arrested after he allegedly threatened a member of his family and barricaded himself inside a Hamilton Mountain home.

Police received a call regarding ‘family trouble’ at a home on East 36th St. shortly after 6 p.m. Monday.

Investigators say all of the home’s residents had exited before police arrived on scene but a man who did not live in the home had barricaded himself inside.

Crisis negotiators spoke with the man to try and get him to come outside peacefully. After several hours of negotiations, a fire broke out in the basement of the home.

“The fire created a large amount of smoke, causing the male to evacuate the residence. Upon exiting, he attempted to flee and was subsequently arrested,” said Hamilton police in a news release.

The man was taken to hospital for non-life threatening injuries he suffered in the fire.

Hamilton firefighters managed to quickly put the fire out.

Police say there were reports of gunshots during the incident but no evidence of a shooting has been found.

The investigation is ongoing and the scene is currently being held as detectives from the Division 30 Criminal Investigations Branch and the Ontario Fire Marshal’s Office are expected to begin their investigations.

The area was closed to traffic and residents were being asked to stay away but it has since been reopened.
