Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) are investigating after someone broke into a Simcoe home while a senior was sleeping inside.

It happened at a residence on South Drive around 6 a.m. Thursday.

Police say an elderly woman awoke to find an unknown man crawling across her bedroom floor on his hands and knees.

“The suspect was in the process of going through a purse that was located next to the bed,” said OPP in a news release. “The homeowner immediately confronted the male who fled from the residence.”

The woman’s next-door neighbour saw the man running from the home and described the suspect as white, and roughly 17 to 20 years old. He was wearing a grey coat with a red hood, dark jeans, and white running shoes.

Police say a large quantity of U.S. cash and about $20,000 worth of jewellery was taken from the home.

The Norfolk County OPP is reminding residents to lock and secure doors and windows of their homes.
