‘Mighty Maeve’ goes home after 130 days in hospital

A little girl who suffered life-altering injuries after she was struck by an out of control vehicle in Hagersville has finally been released from hospital.

Five-year-old Maeve Field returned home Thursday after spending several months at McMaster Children’s Hospital.

“After 130 days as an inpatient, Mighty Maeve has been discharged from the hospital and it is SO GOOD to be home,” said her mother, Gloria, in a post on the family’s GoFundMe page.

On March 9, Maeve left a local hardware store where she was picking out supplies for a special father-daughter project when an elderly woman lost control of her car, reversed onto the sidewalk, and struck the little girl and her brother.

Maeve was dragged a short distance and became pinned underneath the vehicle. She suffered serious head and facial injuries and was rushed to hospital. Her arm and leg were so severely damaged they had to be shortened and her left eye was hurt beyond repair.

Gloria said her daughter still has a long recovery ahead and will require additional surgeries as she continues to grow. She says she will start amputee rehab in the fall but for now, she will rest at home.

“Maeve gets to enjoy her newly updated ‘big girl’ bedroom, snuggling with her doggies and falling asleep outside by the campfire; her favourite therapies,” she said. “It takes a village to raise a child and we are so grateful to be able to bring her home where she belongs.”

An online fundraising campaign was set up to help cover any expenses the family may face in Maeve’s recovery. It is just a few thousand dollars short of its $150,000 goal.

Gloria continued to thank the community in her post and said their support has helped them in through this journey. “We are eternally grateful for the support, messages, prayers, and fundraising that has taken place. Every single donation has and will continue to be employed to improve the quality of Maeve’s life and help secure her future.”
