Halton Regional police are proposing a pilot project where video cameras would be installed on the outside of school buses to capture those who ignore the stop arm that is extended to halt traffic and let kids either on, or off the bus.
The police, along with Local Municipalities have received numerous complaints from the community of drivers zipping by when the stop arm is deployed.
“The videos can be used to quantify the amount of violations, educate the public, and ultimately provide enforcement,” states the report.
Halton police are discussing options with a vendor to potentially provide the technology free of charge during the pilot period.
The pilot project, which will be considered by Halton Regional Council next Wednesday, would be implemented at the beginning of the coming school year.
