SIU investigating police-involved shooting in Smithville

Ontario’s police watchdog is investigating a shooting Friday afternoon in Smithville involving Niagara Regional Police.

It happened in a residential area near Anastasia Blvd. and Townline Rd., just a few kilometres from the Smithville Sports Complex.

The Special Investigations Unit confirms there was a police-involved shooting.

One person has serious injuries.

Niagara Police are staying tight-lipped about why there were in the area but there were multiple officers at the scene, along with paramedics.

Police say there is no threat to public safety.

The District School Board of Niagara confirms there is a police investigation near Smithville Public School on Canborough St.

The principal kept students inside the building this afternoon as a precaution but there is no known threat to student safety.

At least two Niagara Region ambulances were spotted arriving at Hamilton General this afternoon.
