HAPPENING NOW:
Radiation for cancer patients
Radiation is still being given, even though large studies have shown it only has a small benefit for older breast cancer patients.
A 2004 study found radiation treatment had a minimal benefit for women over age seventy.
This has led experts to make radiation treatment an “optional” therapy for these women.
Researchers at Yale looked at radiation rates before and after this recommendation — and found doctors had not made the change.
