St. Catharines man arrested after 7-hour standoff with Niagara police

A 23-year-old man is facing a number of charges including attempted murder after two people were injured during an assault in St. Catharines.
Police were called to a home in the area of Westland St. and Pelham Rd. around 10:45 a.m. on Sunday.
Officers found two women, aged 59 and 21, suffering from injuries. One of the women was treated by paramedics on scene while the other was taken to hospital with serious injuries.
Investigators discovered a 21-year-old man was still inside the home, and armed with weapons. Police say the man had barricaded himself to prevent officers from getting inside.
The Niagara Regional Police Emergency Task Unit and crisis negotiators were called to the scene and around 5:40 p.m., the man was arrested.
He has been charged with assault causing bodily harm, utter threats, assault with a weapon, attempted murder and possession of a weapon contrary to prohibition order.
Westland St. between Mcintryre Ave. and Sterling St. was closed during the incident but has since reopened.
The man’s name cannot be released as it will identify the victims involved.
