The Toolbox Project

As the temperature drops and snow begins to fall, the Toolbox Project returns to help those left out in the cold.
A lack of support for men experiencing homelessness and poverty is what brought the Toolbox Project to life.
Last November James Symons, an active volunteer in Niagara, noticed several care package programs for women, but none for the men. So he set a goal of filling 25 boxes.
“The support was just overwhelming, it was amazing. I was in awe of what the community could do. When our final set of boxes was delivered, we had delivered 360 boxes, we crushed our goal!.”
So this year he’s raising that goal to 500 boxes.
The packages are filled with donated items like 3 in 1 shampoo, deodorant and razors. They are then delivered to those in need in the community.
Symons is also requesting that each toolbox feature at least one fun item that a recipient could use to pass the time, like a deck of cards or Sudoku puzzle.
Mayor Walter Sendzik encouraged city staff to participate as part of St. Catharines’ compassionate city initiative.
“The simple act of giving, of being apart of this project really starts that feeling within people that they can make a difference.”
And Thorold community activities group donated space to the project, which they say is particularly meaningful around the holidays.
The deadline to donate is December 8th, so that this Christmas everyone has something to be thankful for.
