Babies on the heart transplant list

Babies put on the heart transplant list before they’re born get a heart faster than babies listed after their birth.

Researchers at Toronto’s Sick Kids’ hospital found fetal patients waited an average of 25 days after birth to receive a heart transplant — while babies listed after they were born averaged a 39 day wait.

However both groups had similar outcomes after their transplant, with no significant differences in their average age, gender or race.

The most common reason for a pre-natal heart transplant was congenital heart disease.
