Toronto mayor not ruling out legal action

Toronto Mayor John Tory is not ruling out legal action over Premier Doug Ford’s proposed council cut.
Tory says he supports a motion expected to be tabled at city hall today that would see the city examine any legal options in an effort to stall Ford’s prospective changes.
Ford announced on July 27 that he wants to reduce the number of Toronto council seats from 47 to 25 to improve efficiency and cut costs.
Lawyers have said the city could mount a legal challenge against the measures and seek a court injunction that would delay their implementation beyond the October 22 municipal vote.
Tory says it could be a difficult case because of the province’s broad powers but the city can call into question the process of imposing the changes onto it without consultation.
