Burning candle leads to apartment fire in Dundas

Fire officials say a candle is the source of a fire that caused extensive damage to a Dundas apartment building.

Firefighters were called to a high-rise building on Governor’s Rd. around 7:40 p.m. on Saturday.

When crews arrived on scene, they found a fire in a seventh-floor unit and heavy black smoke throughout the entire floor.

Two people who live in the unit were able to get out on their own.

Additional crews were called in to battle the blaze. Firefighters managed to knock the fire down and limit the fire damage to the one apartment. However, 29 other units on the floor sustained smoke damage.

One person was treated for smoke inhalation by Hamilton Paramedics and transported to hospital.

All of the residents on the seventh floor were forced to find alternate accommodations for the evening.

Damage is estimated at roughly $300,000. Officials say the suspected cause of the fire was a candle coming in contact with combustible drapery.

The Hamilton Fire Department is reminding residents to extinguish all candles when leaving a room or before going to sleep.
