Woman charged with arson in central Hamilton fire

Hamilton Police have arrested a 21-year-old Hamilton woman in connection with a fire at a vacant building downtown.

Fire crews were called to a house fire at 15 Cannon St., just west of James St. N around 9:30 p.m. Wednesday.

They found an active fire in the semi-detached home, with flames coming out the rear and from the attic.

Officials say 25 to 20 firefighters were on scene at the height of the blaze.

Crews were able to keep the fire from spreading to the adjoining house, but damage to the home is extensive and is estimated at about $300,000.

The Ontario Fire Marshal was on scene Thursday morning.

There were no injuries to the public or firefighters.
