Police make arrest in fatal road rage crash on QEW

A 32-year-old Mississauga man has been charged in the fatal multi-vehicle collision that claimed the life of 22-year-old Nicole Turcotte.

Yasir Baig, of Mississauga, is facing four charges including dangerous driving causing death, dangerous driving causing bodily harm, failure to remain causing death and failure to remain causing bodily harm.

Turcotte died in hospital after what Ontario Provincial Police call an “unnecessary and preventable” crash.

“This collision all stems from an incident on Saturday, January 27, 2018 when there was a multi-vehicle chain reaction collision that occurred as a result of what appeared to be a vehicle slowing down in front of traffic causing this chain reaction,” said OPP Sgt. Kerry Schmidt in a video posted on Twitter.

The driver of the vehicle Turcotte was a passenger in was forced to slam on the brakes after a Honda Civic merged into the lane and quickly slowed down. Their vehicle was then rear-ended by a pickup truck, sending it crashing forward at into the other vehicles.

Police say the Civic fled the area unscathed via the West Mall exit.

Six other people were injured in the crash including a 19 year old who was taken to hospital in critical condition.

The person in custody is awaiting a bail hearing.

OPP say they will be providing more information later Thursday morning.
