The police watchdog has scheduled a post mortem tomorrow of a St. Catharines man who died following his arrest by Niagara police.

The Special Investigations Unit says it continues it’s probe into the conduct of Niagara police officers who arrested a 27-year-old man on Friday after responding to a robbery at a pharmacy in the area of Welland Ave. and Catherine St.

The SIU says the man was taken straight to a hospital and admitted to intensive care where he was pronounced dead yesterday afternoon.

There was no immediate word on the cause of death and the name of the deceased has not been released.

The SIU is an arm’s length agency that investigates reports involving police where there has been death, serious injury or allegations of sexual assault.
