Man fined $3,500 for breaking quarantine for eight seconds in Taiwan

Authorities in Taiwan has fined a man $3,500 for breaking quarantine regulations for eight seconds.

The man was a migrant worker from the Philippines.

Officials told Taiwan’s Central News Agency he was quarantining the a hotel and briefly stepped out of his room into the hallway. Hotel staff saw it on surveillance video and called the Department of Health.

Taiwan’s quarantine regulations bar people from leaving hotel rooms for any amount of time.

Taiwan has been widely praised for its approach to containing COVID-19.

According to data from Johns Hopkins University, the island of 23 million people has had 716 COVID-19 cases and seven deaths.
