Hamilton hospitals allowing visitors at inpatient units

Hamilton hospitals will begin allowing visitors to inpatients units starting Wednesday.

St. Joseph’s Healthcare Hamilton and Hamilton Health Sciences implemented a no visitor policy in March.

This was based on provincial recommendations to reduce the spread of COVID-19.

As most of the province has loosened restrictions, hospitals are now reintroducing visitors.

Hospitals say the changes balance the role caregivers have in the well-being of patients and the need to keep everyone safe.

Visitors will be screened and are being asked to practice good hand hygiene and physical distancing in public areas.

As of Wednesday, one family member or caregiver who is 18 or older will be allowed to visit admitted patients at Hamilton Health Sciences facilities.

Patients who have tested positive for COVID-19 can also have one caregiver.

They will be given personal protective equipment.

Visiting hours are from 9 a.m. to 8 p.m.

People admitted to St. Joseph’s Healthcare hospitals can have one visitor every other day.

There are exceptions where additional people can be present such as labour and delivery and end-of-life care.
