One person dead after car drives into Welland Canal

At approximately 1:00 a.m. this morning, two Niagara paramedics were driving near the Allanburg Bridge between calls when they witnessed a car drive into the Welland canal. The vehicle went off the bank on the West side of the road.
The paramedics grabbed life jackets and rescue ropes to help the occupants of the sinking car. A 28-year-old woman who was trapped inside the vehicle was able to escape and swim to shore.
Crews were called immediately but when they arrived the car was fully submerged in the water. When they arrived the woman was airlifted to a Hamilton Trauma Centre for critical injuries.
At approximately 8:30 a.m. crews located the vehicle at the bottom of the lake where they found the male driver of the car deceased.
The collision remains under investigation by members of the Collision Reconstruction Unit and the Niagara Regional Police Marine Unit. The mans identity is not being provided at this time as detectives notify next of kin
