Police in Burlington handed out 23 tickets and 6 warnings Sun. May 24. for drivers not having a muffler and creating unnecessary noise. They created a task force to locate the drivers in response to growing complaints from locals.

Halton Police say drivers are removing their mufflers and replacing them with a pipe to enhance the noise. Though they say doesn’t just disturb the neighborhoods, it also causes pollution because there is no catalytic converter to reduce the toxic gases.

They caught around 20 noisy drivers on Saturday and Sunday night in Burlington, but say this issue has been prevalent in the greater Toronto area.

If caught, a person will receive two tickets, one for unnecessary noise, and another for no muffler.

Burlington police also started a hashtag on twitter (#noisemaker) and are sharing pictures of what the exhaust pipe on the cars they catch look like.
