‘Joyful Brass’ band puts smiles on faces of Hamilton seniors

A group of local musicians has come together to put smiles on the faces of Hamilton seniors who have been shut-in by the COVID-19 pandemic.

The Joyful Brass band is a quintet made up of retired and semi-retired band members from the Salvation Army and Bethel Brass.

Salvation Army Colonel Bob Ward says the group has been visiting nursing and retirement homes twice a week in hopes of bringing cheer and inspiration to those who may be feeling isolated.

“No matter what you do, COVID is there. This way, at least, we hope to break through and remind people that there is hope,” said Ward. “The staff and the residents all need encouragement. And we want to let people know they are loved and we appreciate them.”

The band visited the Deerview Crossing Retirement Residence on Tuesday and played a specially-selected repertoire that consisted of music the seniors would connect with.

Most residents enjoyed the music from their balconies while others sat outside to take in the sounds.

“The players love doing this. They love music. It’s a nice way to be able to keep safe and keep healthy while at the same time connecting with people who really need to be connected with,” Ward said.
