HAPPENING NOW:

Students learn organs are recyclable

A super-sized game of Operation rolled into McMaster University’s student centre Tuesday.

It’s part of an ongoing campaign to draw attention to the need for organ and tissue donation. Students are invited to play the game Operation while they learn about the donation process. Eligible donors are encouraged to register their consent. The event was put on by the Trillium Gift of Life network, an Ontario government agency.

Also on hand was heart recipient Devan Cruickshanks, who says without the generosity of organ donors, she wouldn’t have lived to tell her tale. “I was seven at the time. It has really put a different perspective on life. I’m happy to be here today and if it wasn’t for organ donation I wouldn’t be.”

According to the Gift of Life statistics, one person dies every three days in Ontario waiting for an organ transplant. You can get more information about the campus campaign online at recycleme.org.
