Man charged with impaired driving after car crashes into Lake Erie

A 53-year-old man is facing charges after a car crashed into Lake Erie Tuesday night.
Police, paramedics, and firefighters were called to the area of Harbourview Rd. and Lakeshore Rd. in Wainfleet around 9:30 p.m.
Police say a grey Chevrolet Monte Carlo failed to navigate a curve in the road, became airborne and rolled into Lake Erie.
Emergency crews found the car on its roof in roughly a metre of water.
Firefighters helped the driver get out of the vehicle and he was safely brought to shore. Police say he did not suffer any injuries in the crash.
Michael Degagne, of Wainfleet, was arrested and charged with impaired operation of a motor vehicle and refuse to provide a breath sample.
Degagne was also issued a 90-day driver’s licence suspension.
He has been released from custody and is expected to appear back in court on March 20.
Police say a “lengthy retrieval process” was required to remove the demolished vehicle from the lake and there was no evidence of environmental impact.
