The 14-year-old accused of fatally stabbing Hamilton teenager Devan Selvey is now facing new charges.

The teen, who cannot be named under the Youth Criminal Justice Act, appeared in court Thursday morning.

During the teen’s court appearance, it was learned that he is also facing two counts of uttering threats and one count each of forcible confinement and assault cause bodily harm in connection with an unrelated case that happened in 2017.

The victim’s mother tells CHCH news that her son was slashed with a knife and that her son was bullied so much by the same group who bullied Devan that she pulled her son out of Winston Churchill.

Selvey died in hospital after he was stabbed behind Sir Winston Churchill Secondary School on Oct. 7.

The teen is charged with first-degree murder in Selvey’s death.

An 18-year-old man had initially been charged with murder in his death, but the charge was reduced on Dec. 13. The man, who cannot be identified under a court-ordered publication ban, is now facing new charges including assault with a weapon, possession of a prohibited weapon and administering a noxious thing.

Devan Selvey’s alleged killer will be back in court on January 29th

Selvey’s death sparked a province-wide conversation about bullying and spurred the Hamilton-Wentworth District School Board to create a new anti-bullying panel. The province also implemented new measures to help combat bullying in schools including more training for teachers and a review of how incidents are reported.
