Police say an 81-year-old woman has died and two others are injured following a two-vehicle crash in Welland early Wednesday afternoon.

Niagara police say a white Chevrolet Trax travelling on Fitch Street was about to turn right onto Prince Charles Drive around 12 p.m. when a white Chevrolet Silverado that was travelling north on Prince Charles Drive collided with the Trax.

Officers say the Trax then struck a pole, causing significant damage to it’s front end.

Paramedics say they transported the 83-year-old male driver to hospital in life-threatening condition.

Police say the 81-year-old female passenger died at the scene, while paramedics say she was found without vital signs before she was taken to a local hospital.

Niagara police say the 55-year-old male driver of the Silverado suffered minor injuries.

Niagara police’s collision reconstruction unit is now investigating the cause of the crash.

Residents in the area raised concerns after the incident, saying that although the speed limit along Prince Charles in 50 kilometres an hour, drivers frequently exceed that.

At this time, police say its too early to say if speed was a factor and no charges have been laid at this time.

Anyone with information regarding this collision is asked to contact police at 905-688-4111, ext. 1008389.
