Police have charged two men involved in a standoff in Stoney Creek Tuesday.

Hamilton police responded shortly after 11 a.m. to a disturbance at a multi-unit home in the area of Maple Avenue and Mountain Avenue South.

Officers say they were confronted by a man who pointed a firearm at them, prompting police to pull back and notify the force’s emergency response unit.

Investigators urged residents of the three-unit home and throughout the neighbourhood to stay inside.

Const. Indy Bharaj says one resident complied, while another left the building and was escorted to a safe area.

No injuries have been reported at this time.

Nearly one hour later, the barricaded man and woman exited the building on their own following instructions from police.

Police arrested the pair, but the woman was later released after she was determined to have been a victim in the situation.

Sean David Thorburn, 45, was charged with nine offences, including point firearm and forcible confinement.

Officers searched the home and found a .22 caliber handgun loaded with four bullets.

Investigators also confirmed that a white Ford F550 that was parked in the driveway had been reported stolen from the Guelph area. Officers found a stun gun in the vehicle as well.

A third man who fled the scene was later arrested. Police have now charged 38-year-old Justin Mattina with three counts of failing to comply.

Investigators closed roads in the area of Maple Avenue and Mountain Avenue South, but they have since reopened.
