The Hamilton Pride event takes place outdoors for the first time in over three years, due to protests at Gage Park in 2019.

It was a day to celebrate diversity and inclusion, but also just an excuse to get out and enjoy the weather.

While Pride is a time to celebrate, it’s also an opportunity to show diversity within the community. People from many different organizations attended the event to show the importance of representation.

Mayor Andrea Horwath spoke about the importance of being able to celebrate openly without fear. It was back in 2019 when Hamilton Pride was met with violent protests.

“Knowing the history and saying we’re turning a page. As a city, I’m representing city council here today we’re turning a page,” said Horwath.

“We are going to do everything we can to continue to support the community, to support the 2SLGBTQIA Plus community and help them, you know, help make sure that they’re able to celebrate, able to be a part of our community without fear.”

Meanwhile, Free Mom Hugs was created because the group says not everyone can celebrate who they are.

“So we are here giving hugs to people who may not have gotten that from their parents and support.,” said Christa Botten, from Free Mom Hugs. “We are really a safe place for everyone.”
