The community in Burlington held a candlelight walk and celebration of life in memory of Jayne Anne Hounslow, 8, on Monday evening.

Halton police have said Jayne was struck by a white SUV in a laneway between Central High School and Central Public School around 5:30 p.m. on May 3.

Jayne’s online obituary says she was a beautiful, strong soul who loved and cared for people more than anyone. She loved playing soccer, taekwondo, singing, and telling jokes. Her family says she often wrote notes of inspiration for her friends and cousins.

At the celebration of life, Jayne’s mother, Sarah Hounslow said, “Jayne taught us so much about love, life, and purpose. Her greatest joy was finding ways to make other people happy and spreading laughter. Jayne would show kindness through her generosity, making gifts, her encouraging words, hugs, lending a helping hand, and always doing what was right.”

To honour Jayne, her family has established an endowment fund called Jayne’s Fund with the Burlington Foundation. The fund will provide access to recreation, arts, and camp opportunities to local children and youth in need.

A 21-year-old man from Burlington was arrested and charged in connection with her death.
