Fort Erie Racetrack accuses Woodbine of ‘predatory practices’ to harm competition

The Fort Erie Racetrack has filed a complaint against Woodbine, alleging the horse racing track is using “predatory practices” to try and destroy the competition in Ontario.

The complaint was brought up at Queen’s Park on Monday by Niagara MPP Wayne Gates.

He told Queen’s Park that Fort Erie has filed a complaint with the Canadian Trade Commission. He said Woodbine is trying to create a monopoly on the industry.

“Woodbine is bullying smaller tracks and using their power within this government and the regulatory body to get away with it,” he said.

Gates also said scheduling is an issue, as woodbine won’t proactively work with Fort Erie to schedule the biggest race of the year, the Triple Crown Races.

In response to the claims at Queen’s Park, Woodbine said they have tried to cooperate with Fort Erie and optimize each track’s racing programs, but said Fort Erie has not expressed interest in doing so.

Fort Erie Racetrack said the monopoly is directly hurting their races and tourism.
