Stomach bug outbreak declared at childcare centre in Simcoe

A childcare centre in Simcoe is closing for at least five days after an outbreak of gastroenteritis at the facility.

The Haldimand-Norfolk Health Unit sent out a notice yesterday recognizing an enteric disease outbreak at Evergreen Heights Childcare Centre located at 140 Oak St.

There are reportedly 39 individuals from the care centre experiencing symptoms of gastroenteritis, including students and staff.

These outbreaks may be caused by bacteria, viruses or parasites entering the body through the consumption of contaminated foods or drinks, and/or through contact with contaminated items or infected persons.

The health unit says it is working closely with Evergreen Heights to implement a public health management plan.

All symptomatic persons have been sent home and the daycare has closed for the next five days.

Spokesperson for Norfolk County Health and Social Services, Jarah Stefek said the health unit will continue to provide updates as they become available.
