Police charge man with arson after Hamilton church set on fire

Hamilton police have arrested and charged a 49-year-old man after he allegedly attempted to set fire to St. Paul’s Presbyterian Church last month.

Officers and the Hamilton Fire Department responded to a fire alarm call around 4:15 p.m. on New Year’s Eve.

Investigators found flammable liquid and evidence of arson.

Leslie Cleave, of no fixed address, has been charged with four separate offences, including arson and possession of incendiary material.

St. Paul’s Presbyterian Church was founded in 1833 and is a federally designated National Historic Site.
