Residents of Hamilton apartment without water for two days

Residents of an apartment building at 1083 Main Street East in Hamilton have been buying jugs of water to clean and cook since Wednesday, Dec. 28. There has been no running water in the building due to the recent winter storm, and the tenants are calling for the city to do more.
David Galvin has had to flush his toilet with a jug of water for the last two days, “it takes two of these jugs and or, eight litres in total to provide an effective flush.”
Water pipes were open to the elements due to recent construction. “Some of the areas in the building were left exposed in the cold air. So the pipes froze, and then they had to shut off the water supply because the pipes were flooding,” Galvin said.
There are nine occupied units, and all of them have had no water since Wednesday. Tenants here tell CHCH News that property managers have left them to deal with this alone.
Since speaking with the residents, they tell CHCH that on Friday, Grow Ontario property management offered alternative accommodations for one month as they work to restore the water.
“While I’m angry at the landlord, my deepest anger is with the city who should be dealing with issues like this,” Galvin said.
Galvin says the city sent an inspector to the building on Wednesday night. He hasn’t heard back from him.
Households at the building were given an N13, sometimes known as a renoviction, as a result of the renovations but the tenants do not want to leave and are now waiting for a hearing at the landlord and tenant board.
CHCH News reached out for comment from the city but has heard nothing yet.
