Construction worker trapped in trench for over 3 hours in Oakville

A worker was trapped for over three hours at a construction site in Oakville Monday night after the trench he was working in collapsed around him.

The 26-year-old man found himself stuck in over three meters of dirt, reaching up to his waist.

The man was trapped at a residential construction site at 401 Lakeshore Rd. West and required a multi-city response by emergency services.

Oakville firefighters, Mississauga firefighters, as well as a specialized Trench Rescue Team from Mississauga fire assisted in the rescue.

Mississauga Fire Chief Deryn Rizzi said a trench rescue is a low-frequency but high hazard incident. She described crews’ response as organized and methodical with ongoing decisions based on the patient’s condition.

Halton paramedics assisted by Ornge provided medical care on scene before the man was taken to hospital by land ambulance.

Reports say the Ministry of Labour attended the scene. There is no word on the man’s condition at this time.

Mississauga Mayor, Bonnie Crombie sent her kudos to Mississauga Fire for lending a helping hand to Oakville Fire.

“Thank you to all those involved for successfully conducting this trench rescue and bringing this individual to safety,” Crombie said. “Sending our wishes for a swift recovery.”
