Large police presence in McMaster area ahead of homecoming parties Saturday

Hamilton police will be monitoring some neighbourhoods near McMaster University starting today in anticipation of a large, unsanctioned homecoming party.

Officers say Westdale and Ainslie Woods residents can expect a “significant police presence” beginning today until Sunday at 11:59 p.m. due to a planned street gathering.

“Unsanctioned street gatherings are unsafe and result in unnecessary demands on all of our emergency services, including our hospitals,” said HPS Superintendent Dave Hennick.

“They are disruptive to the community and pose significant safety risks to those in attendance.”

Police say up to 5,000 people gathered in the Westdale and Ainslie Woods neighbourhoods last year that resulted in property damage and several charges.

This year, the City of Hamilton has new tools under its belt to dissuade partiers.

The city passed the Nuisance Party bylaw earlier this month, which allows police and bylaw officials to issue harsher penalties to those hosting and attending gatherings.

A host, property owner or attendee can face up to $10,000 for a first offence and $25,000 for any subsequent offence related to a nuisance party. Those charged may also be responsible for the cost of cleanup and additional services.
