The teenager who pleaded guilty to the murder of 14-year-old Devan Selvey has been sentenced to seven years.

The teen, who has already served two years, was sentenced to two more years behind bars on Friday morning. He will then serve three years under supervision in the community.

The 16-year-old boy pleaded guilty to second-degree murder back in November 2021.

He was 14-years-old when he fatally stabbed Selvey behind Sir Winston Churchill Secondary School on Oct. 7, 2019.

The youth cannot be identified under the Youth Criminal Justice Act.

An agreed statement of facts said the two boys hardly knew each other.

On the day of the stabbing, Selvey and a friend saw a group of teens hanging out across the street from the school. The group included a teen, who Selvey believed, had stolen his bike the month prior.

Selvey contacted his sister and his friend’s parents who came to the school and confronted the teens.

An argument broke out and bear mace was sprayed by the older brother of the teen convicted in Selvey’s death.

Selvey chased after the group and his mother followed in her vehicle, urging her son to get inside.

As his mother stepped out of her vehicle, Selvey was stabbed from behind.
