Discover all that Sault Ste. Marie has to offer

Tim Bolen went on an adventure for his Rollin’ With Bolen segments and headed to Northern Ontario. He is making a few stops with Destination Ontario and his second stop was Sault Ste. Marie.

Tim started in Thunder Bay and then hopped on a quick Bearskin Airlines flight to end up in The Soo. If you want to drive though you will see landscape that you would never expect to find in Ontario. Take the time and pullover as often as you can on the 700km drive, and if you’re lucky, you’ll see some of Lake Superior’s best sights.

The Sault Ste. Marie Canal National Historic sight represents the last link in a chain of waterways that bring the western tip of Lake Superior and connects it to the waterways and the cities out east and the Atlantic Ocean. It was opened in 1895 and at the time the canal was the longest lock in the world, and it was it was the first electric lock in operation worldwide.

The fishing is also really good thanks to the rapids, which is where Tim visited next. He spent some time in the St. Mary’s rapids with fly fishing guide, Johnny Giuliani. At the rapids you can catch rainbow trout, Atlantic salmon and steelhead.

He then hopped on a bike to cycle to the Canal District, where you can get house made gelato, cookies and donuts. The district is new to Sault Ste. Marie and is a culinary delight. In the summer there are plenty of events happening there such as flea markets and weddings. But the biggest attraction is the train station, which is a Destination Ontario bucket list event. The train rides start August 1st and is done October 10th so you can see the most picturesque scenery.

From there he met some new friends at Entomica Insectarium. There you can see insects from all over the world because they are so fascinating.

His last stop on his bike tour of Sault St. Marie was Bushplane Museum where he learned about aircrafts and saw the CL-215 waterbomber, which is the biggest aircraft in the museum. Visit them and learn how to fly through simulators, arcade-style gaming consoles and interactive displays.
