Fort Erie Lions Club raising money to fund affordable housing project

First Published:

The Lions Club in Fort Erie has announced its plans to break ground on a new affordable housing project — but it’s looking for help.

Keith Rothney says the organization needs to raise $1.5 million to receive project funding and “put our shovels in the ground.”

The plan began just over six years ago and includes creating a nine-storey building that would have 62 units.

If they reach their target goal, it would unlock $19 million in federal funding to go towards the initiative.

As such, they’ve launched an online initiative in an effort to spur donations and help bring the project to completion.

“There is absolutely no question that need for affordable housing in our community is immediate and vast,” says volunteer Linda Scott, Chairperson of the Lions Douglas Heights Residence Board.

“It is estimated that 45 per cent of Fort Erie’s population is aged 55 plus, and this number will grow to 50 per cent by 2041,” she added.

Those looking to donate can visit their website, here.
