Canada closing Bangladesh embassy

First Published:

Canada’s embassy in Dhaka, Bangladesh, will be closed starting Sunday amid a widespread U.S. travel alert in the region. The U.S. warned Canadian officials after terrorism threats were made.

A spokesman for the Foreign Minister says they are closing the mission as a security precaution and events will be monitored closely.

The threat of a terrorist attack led to the weekend closure of 21 U.S. embassies and consulates in the Muslim world. Travellers were warned to practise extra caution in the Middle East and North Africa. An alert like that hasn’t been issued since the tenth anniversary of the Sept. 11, 2001 strikes on the World Trade Centre.

Canada’s Foreign Minister John Baird had said on Friday there were no plans to close any Canadian missions in the region. He did urge diplomats and Canadian travellers to be careful and said his officials would be monitoring events throughout the weekend.
