Final submissions delivered in fatal Hamilton shelter stabbing case

First Published:

On Thursday, final submissions were made in the trial against Jheidohn Serieaux for the death of Christopher Sim.

Serieaux’s counsel concluded the judge-only trial by asking the court to consider his mental health, saying there were no signs of a “plan to kill.”

Sim was fatally stabbed outside the Mission Services building on James Street North on Aug. 8, 2021.

According to Serieaux, Sim had assaulted him earlier that morning — fracturing his skull and leaving him bleeding profusely.

The Crown, however, said that Serieaux did not call the police, nor was he covered in blood later that day when he returned to confront Sim.

Serieaux told the court that he was only trying to send Sim a message and thought “he was just going to get cut a bit.”

The judge presiding over the case is now tasked with deciding whether the attack on Sim was spontaneous, or deliberate.
