Mohawk College plans to expand into Burlington over several years

First Published:

Mohawk College announced this morning it’s intention to expand operations over the next several years and build campuses in Burlington.

The Hamilton-based college formalized a letter of understanding with the City of Burlington and Burlington Economic Development to establish new learning hubs and campuses.

The expansion is planned to develop over several years with different programs being offered at different hubs and locations.

Mohawk College President Paul Armstrong said in a media release, “we are excited to extend the college’s world-class post-secondary training into Burlington.”

A satellite campus was established at the village of Tansley Woods in 2023 which offered personal support worker, practical nursing and occupational therapy assistant and physiotherapy assistant programs.

“Students that have an opportunity to be educated and learn in their community, will often stay in that community,” Armstrong said.

Burlington city council says it acknowledges how attractive a post-secondary institution would be for the overall health of the city.

The Burlington Chamber of Commerce says it hopes the expansion can remedy shortages in health care and other industries within the city.

Mayor Marianne Meed Ward said, “We are thrilled to welcome Mohawk College to our family of post-secondary institutions in Burlington, as part of our strategic plan to enhance local education and economic growth.

“By supporting post-secondary institutions, we aim to build a skilled workforce that will stay and thrive in our community,” she added.
