Extreme weather straining infrastructure throughout Hamilton and surrounding region

First Published:

The amount of rainfall over the last week has put a strain on the infrastructure system in our area — and the forecast is calling for more.

The past week has been challenging for the City of Hamilton’s water treatment system according to Nick Winters, Director of Hamilton Water. He says the city’s system is running exactly as it should — but they have had some close calls.

“Unfortunately during wet weather there’s always going to be challenges with partially treated wastewater being discharged in Hamilton harbor,” something he says has already happened at Dundas’ sanitary pump station as a result of the heavy rainfall.

Yesterday’s massive downpour also affected local fields used for summer sports including the one at Nelson High School.

Jeff Brock, the Burlington Stampeders tackle director says some games have had to be rescheduled, however, a new field drainage system put in two years ago allowed them to play last night.

“Monday at 2 o’clock, it unloaded again in Burlington, the field was underwater,” he said. “We were thankful to get some good drainage here and got the game in last night.”

Due to the extreme rain in the last 24 hours, the City of Burlington is urging residents to caution when moving around the city.
